How do you help your baby poop
Constipation in babies
When defecating, young infants sometimes press very violently with their heads reddened. This should not be confused with constipation and is normal as long as the stool is not hard and the children are thriving.

How do you recognize constipation?
You can tell if your baby is constipated by the following symptoms:
- Your child will not have a bowel movement for a day or two. However, it is perfectly normal for breastfeeding infants to sometimes have no bowel movements for several days.
- The stool is firm and made up of small globules.
- Your child has blood in the stool from small tears in the anus caused by the strain of straining.
- Your child has a stomach ache (Colic)
In general, breastfed babies are very rarely constipated, although their bowel movements are usually less frequent than babies. The spread can be between six times a day and only once every 10 days, especially with pure breast milk nutrition. Breast milk is easier to digest and stimulates the baby's digestive tract. If you are breastfeeding your baby and their stools are soft and yellow in color, they are sure not to be constipated.
Constipated babies are more likely to be constipated. Switching from breast to bottle or the first meal of porridge can also be the trigger.
It is not uncommon for a relative lack of fluids to be the cause. Therefore, first check that you have not prepared the bottle or porridge too thick, i.e. with too little water. Even if your child has a fever or in very hot weather it can easily become oneDehydration and thereby lead to constipation.
Treating Constipation in Babies
Therefore, first check that you have not prepared the bottle or porridge too thick, i.e. with too little water. Give your child more water or fennel tea to drink between meals. If that doesn't help, try a little diluted fruit juice (approx. 30-50 ml of plum or apple juice twice a day). Lactose as an addition to bottle food (one teaspoon per bottle) stimulates stool formation without causing habituation. Porridge children should be given whole grain porridge.
If your baby is still constipated, it is advisable to see a doctor. In the case of persistent constipation, cow's milk protein intolerance can be the cause. The “allergy test” in the blood or the skin prick test rarely helps. A cow's milk-free diet for 2 to 4 weeks can clarify the situation.
Adult laxatives or enemas are not recommended. They can irritate the baby's delicate intestinal lining. Powdered products are now available for children. They contain long-chain molecules, so-called polyethylene glycols (PEG, also called macrogol), which, due to their osmotic effect, bind water in the intestine and soften the stool. They are eliminated unchanged. The powder is stirred into water or other liquids and drunk, but can also be added with soup or porridge. Due to their good tolerance, the preparations can also be used over a longer period of time.
Lactulose and - less often - paraffin oil are also used for purging with children. However, they have more side effects like stomach ache and gas than PEG.
