Problem:

For your desktop shortcuts you would like to use some icons that you have created yourself. However, you do not want to buy a program that can generate ICO files for this purpose.

Solution:

It is not necessary to convert a self-created symbol into ICO format in order to use it on the desktop. A picture in BMP format does the same.

The Paint program supplied with Windows, which can be found in the "Programs, Accessories" folder, is sufficient to create one. If you don't feel like completely designing an icon, you can simply import suitable graphics from the web into the program: Press the - keys for a corresponding graphic and then - .

Then use the selection tool to mark the desired area and save it in a BMP file using "Edit, Copy to".

You can also use this method to borrow an icon from another program by pressing to move its link on the desktop to the clipboard and paste it into Paint with - .

Now click with the right mouse button on the shortcut whose icon you want to change and select "Properties" from the context menu. Then click on "Change Icon" and enter the previously created BMP file under "File name". After you have confirmed everything with "OK", the new icon will be used for the link. Windows automatically adjusts the image to the size of the icon.
