Register a Network Policy Server in an Active Directory domain

You can use this topic to register a server running Network Policy Server in Windows Server 2016 in the NPS standard domain or in another domain.

Register an NPS in its standard domain

You can use this procedure to register an NPS in the domain of which the server is a domain member.

NPSS must be registered in Active Directory so that you have permission to read the dial-in properties of user accounts during the authorization process. When registering an NPS, the server is assigned to the group " RAS and IAS servers "added in Active Directory.

You must be at least a member of the group Administrators or an appropriate group to perform these procedures.

How to register an NPS in its standard domain

  1. Click on the NPS in Server Manager Tools, and then click on Network policy server. The Network Policy Server Console opens.

  2. Right click on NPS (local), and then click Register on server in Active Directory. The dialog box Network Policy Server will be opened.

  3. Click in the dialog box Network Policy Server on OKand click again OK.

Register an NPS in a different domain

To deploy an NPS that has permission to read the dial-up properties of user accounts in Active Directory, the NPS must be registered in the domain in which the accounts are located.

You can use this procedure to register an NPS in a domain that the NPS is not a member of.

You must be at least a member of the group Administrators or an appropriate group to perform these procedures.

How to register an NPS in a different domain

  1. On the domain controller in Server Manager, click Tools, and then click on Active Directory users and computers. The Active Directory Users and Computers console opens.

  2. In the console tree, navigate to the domain in which you want to read the NPS user account information, and then click the folder user .

  3. Right-click in the details pane RAS and IAS servers, and then click properties. The dialog box Features of RAS and IAS servers will be opened.

  4. Click in the dialog box Features of RAS and IAS servers on the tab Members , add any NPSSs that you want to register with the domain, and then click OK.

How to register an NPS in a different domain using Netsh commands for NPS

  1. Open the command prompt or Windows PowerShell.

  2. Enter the following at the command prompt: netsh NPS add registeredserverdomainserver, and then press ENTER.

In the previous command is domain the DNS domain name of the domain in which you want to register the NPS, and server is the name of the NPS computer.
