You can use fabric paint for wood
Use acrylic paint on fabric - that's how it works!
Acrylic paint is known as artist paint and should not be missing in the repertoire of hobby hobbyists. Anyone who likes to paint and beautify objects with acrylic paint knows that it has many positive properties. Usually the paint is suitable for surfaces such as canvases, metal and wood. But textiles can also be painted with it. However, there are a few things to consider here in order to achieve the best possible result.
This is what acrylic paint is made of
If you want to work on a blanket, a T-shirt or another piece of fabric with acrylic paint, you should first look at the composition of the agent. This ensures that the properties are actually suitable for your own project. The remedy mainly consists of the following components:
- Pigments ensure that surfaces are evenly covered and are also responsible for changing other colors. They thus ensure the color and hiding power.
- Solvents are used to dissolve the binder. This is important so that the paint is even. Eventually the solvent evaporates (in this case it is water).
- Binders are important for the connection between the substrate and the paint, but also so that the individual particles of the pigments connect with each other.
Lacquers and coatings with acrylic are based on a so-called "dispersion". This means that such compositions usually contain the additives mentioned. One property of dispersions, for example, is that they can be tough, but also thin.
Acrylic paint fabric - the instructions
If you want to paint a piece of fabric with acrylic paint for the first time, you will certainly have many questions at the beginning. But painting is basically very easy if you pay attention to the following points. This is ideally how to proceed:
- First of all, a suitable surface is sought, which should ideally be level. In some cases, textiles can also be attached to the ends with clothespins if, for example, it is a surface where the fabric is stretched. To prevent the textiles from slipping while painting, you can place a heavier object on the edge of the piece of fabric.
- Apply the acrylic paint evenly. It is important that a layer that is not too thick is applied in order to achieve a clean result. A thin layer is usually sufficient. At the beginning the color appears milky. However, after drying, a rich color can be seen.
- Let the paint dry. As a rule, the paint dries very quickly, often within a few minutes. If you want to prevent drying too quickly, you should therefore dilute the colors with water when painting. This extends the drying time.
A thinner layer of paint ensures that textiles do not become too stiff and remain supple. Acrylic paint should therefore be used sparingly.
The color is suitable for this clothing
As a rule, an acrylic paint can be applied to almost all items of clothing. However, it should be noted that acrylic adheres very strongly and cannot necessarily be removed even after several washes. So if you want to paint your sweater, shirt or pants, you should be aware of this. There is still one exception: leather. This material is a textile with an extremely smooth surface. For this reason, an acrylic blend is not particularly suitable for clothing made of leather. Drying and sticking becomes problematic here. However, there is a special leather color that can be used for this problem.
Advantages and disadvantages of acrylic paint at a glance
Those who opt for an acrylic paint benefit from various advantages:
- the paint can be diluted with water
- Acrylic paint has a rich tone
- it lasts a long time and even after many washes
But of course there is also the other side. These are the disadvantages of acrylic paint on textile:
- Errors are difficult to correct
- too much paint hardens the fabric
Which brush do I use?
A beautiful result with acrylic paints can only be achieved if the right tools are used for it. Above all, this includes a suitable brush. The bristles for a brush that comes into contact with acrylic should be made of nylon, polyester, and natural material. The brushes are available in different designs: hard, soft, flat, round. Fine brushes are particularly suitable for sketching and painting edges and smaller areas. A wide brush with lots of bristles helps with large surfaces.
More tips for painting with acrylic paint
If you don't want to make a “mess” while painting and are looking for an inexpensive way to place acrylic paint for painting, you can try cling film. For this purpose, for example, a pot or plate is covered with the foil and the color comes onto the foil. This surface is also suitable for mixing paint. The advantage of foil: the paint does not adhere to the surface of pots, plates or other utensils. After you have finished painting, you can easily remove the film from the container and dispose of it together with the paint residue.
It is also helpful to have a loose piece of cloth on hand. Since acrylic varnish hardens very quickly, errors can only be corrected with difficulty. If the color goes wrong, it should be removed immediately with a cloth. The color has one disadvantage. Once it has dried, it cannot be easily removed.
The right technique for acrylic painting on fabric
If you want to paint fine lines, you should always make sure that the brush is not covered with a lot of paint. If the result does not yet meet your own requirements, you can always add some color. This option is suitable for a particularly clean result. If you absorb a lot of paint right from the start, you run the risk of the paint strokes becoming too coarse and the result no longer looking fine.
Anyone who has never worked with acrylic paint will probably wonder how to proceed. First you can start coloring in from the background. After that, finer lines can be drawn and details are added at the end. If you also want to mix the color, for example to create a secondary color, you should first apply the lighter shade pure. Then the darker color can be added. However, the first color must still be wet in order to actually produce the desired shade. If you want the result to last a long time, you can use a special top coat that is available from specialist retailers. However, such varnishes are often only used for paintings.
If you are unsure, it is best to simply ask the specialist to get a professional opinion.
How to remove acrylic paint from fabric
Of course it happens that a blob goes wrong or acrylic paint ends up on your own clothing, even though you wanted to paint another object with it. Then many people wonder how they can reverse it. To prevent such mistakes right from the start, you can, for example, put on an apron, work with gloves or wear old clothes that you only use for this purpose. However, if you do need to clean a piece of fabric, proceed as follows:
- First, excess paint that has not yet dried is quickly removed. A piece of fabric or a paper towel is suitable for this, for example.
- Finally, the remaining paint is scraped off with an object such as cutlery. A toothbrush can also be used. However, this only helps if the paint hasn't stuck to the fabric for too long.
- If all else fails, you can turn to alcohol. This is used to dab the stain that is to be removed. The paint can be removed after a while. Isopropyl alcohol, which can be purchased in the pharmacy, is particularly suitable for acrylic paint.
- Finally, the washing machine remains. Color residues can be removed after a wash cycle if they have not stuck to the fabric for too long.
Some stains can be removed with a little washing-up liquid. For this, warm water should be mixed with washing-up liquid. Then apply to the stain, rub in and wash out.
The alternative to acrylic paint for textile substrates
Not everyone can immediately make friends with an acrylic varnish. For this reason there are some alternatives that can also be used for painting fabrics. For example, special fabric paints are suitable as a substitute for acrylic paints. These are designed so that they adhere particularly well to textile surfaces and are easy to apply.
If you buy fabric paints in stores, you don't have to buy too many paints either. It is enough if you buy the basic colors. The colors are wonderful to mix with each other. For example, you can mix the color yellow with red to get orange. If you want a purple shade, try the colors blue and red. The color intensity can also be adjusted as you like. Incidentally, all of this is also possible with acrylic paints.
Things to know about acrylic paints
Acrylic paints play a particularly important role in art history. Although the development began in 1915, the paint only became really successful after 1950. Even then, the color was popular with young artists. They could let off steam in an expressionistic way, play with rich and pale colors and express their creativity. Not only flat surfaces were created. With acrylic paint, it was possible to create uneven surfaces if more of the paint was applied. A whole new kind of art emerged. Above all, it was seen then and now as an alternative to classic oil painting, because acrylic scores with many positive properties. Important points are:
- optical effect is retained for a very long time
- the color is odorless
- As a solvent, water is environmentally friendly
- Acrylic varnish is insoluble in water
- the drying time is short
Acrylic paints scored points above oil paints because the latter are susceptible to light. It can happen that the rich colors fade when exposed to UV radiation.
Acrylic paint is wonderfully suitable for painting fabrics. Acrylic varnish also has different advantages. The paint dries very quickly, has rich nuances and is still durable even after many washes. However, it is important that the paint is removed quickly if a paint stain goes wrong. This works best with a paper towel, alcohol, washing-up liquid, and water.
