High school student from Munich develops random number generator
Gesa Dünnweber (17) from the St. Anna High School in Munich is now generating random numbers herself, which are necessary for secure encryption. She has designed her own microchip application for this purpose. “I will present a random generator that produces real random numbers directly on a microchip. For demonstration purposes, the generated numbers are displayed on the computer as colored squares, making it easy to identify unwanted regularities, ”she says. Such random numbers are necessary for secure passwords. The high school student convinced the jury of the “Invent a Chip” student competition with her project. She secured first place in the decision, endowed with 3,000 euros. For the 17th time, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the technology association VDE are organizing the globally unique competition at over 3,000 schools. Young people learn complex chip development in the process. “Participation was definitely worth it. I learned a hardware description language that is completely different from normal programming languages. The competition motivated me to successfully complete my project despite initial uncertainties, ”she describes her experience. Over 2,000 students in grades eight to thirteen took part in the current round. In a practical workshop at the Leibniz University in Hanover, the ten best teams learned the basics of chip design. “This gives young people the chance to take their first steps like professionals. You experience the fascination of the new technologies through your own activities, ”says VDE CEO Ansgar Hinz. The aim of the competition is to get the youngsters excited about electrical engineering and information technology.
The implementation of the “random generation” by Gesa Dünnweber has now received the coveted award. Your project received an award in front of business, politics and science at the VDE Tec Summit in Berlin. “This is digitization and progress that young people dare to do on their own. In their exhibits it becomes clear that they are using the new technologies to solve very specific problems, ”says Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek.
The award winner presents the possible functions in a model way. "On the experiment board with the microchip, I have implemented a" lottery "in which several numbers are typed and the number of correctly typed numbers is displayed by my generator after the" lottery draw "."
Second place, endowed with 2,000, went to Niklas Dobberstein (16) from the Lindlar grammar school. He designed an intelligent, ergonomic workplace for mobile offices. Settings for table and chair height or the inclination of the backrest as well as lighting and ambient temperature can be automatically adjusted for each registered workplace user. Third place and prize money of 1,000 euros went to Timo Alexander Schmidt (19) from the Bischöfliches Cusanus-Gymnasium in Koblenz. His chip idea deals with an everyday problem that can affect anyone: the empty toilet roll in someone else's toilet. “The filling level is now indicated with the help of three colored LEDs,” he says. The special prize of 2,000 from the Federal Ministry of Research goes to Patrick Bär (18), Luca Beetz (17), Josias Neumüller (16) and Marcel Schöckel (16) from the Markgraf-Georg-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Kulmbach. They want to avoid back pain through a stressful sitting posture and have developed a microchip-based "seat sensor" for this. “With the help of two sensor modules, it recognizes whether you are sitting crooked or hunched,” explains the team.
For Gesa Dünnweber, who won first place, the effort paid off: “The competition exceeded my expectations because I was able to complete my project and at the same time had a lot of fun and learned a lot,” she says.
In addition to the cash prizes, the winners can now expect to be included in the selection process for a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation, contacts to industry and universities, and invitations to project presentations at trade fairs. "Invent a Chip" is supported by numerous sponsors in the current competition round: Bosch, Cologne Chip, Globalfoundries, Infineon, Mentor Graphics, Siemens, Videantis, DKE, German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies in DIN and VDE.
