What is a resume?

A resume is a brief overview of a person's personal and professional history, skills and education. Its main function is to proudly show off your best self to potential employers.

When you apply, recruiters (usually) ask you for a résumé along with a cover letter.

How do you write a resume for your first job?

Writing a résumé may seem extremely scary to you. Typically, most resumes on the internet are 80% work experience. So what the heck should you put in it if you don't have one?

Now the good news. When you apply for an entry-level position or internship, NOBODY expects you to have work experience.

Instead, you should focus more on what you already have, namely education, projects, volunteering, hobbies & interests and much more.

What should be in a résumé?

The most common headings on a resume are:

  • Brief profile or career goal

  • work experience

  • training

If you want to personalize your résumé a little more, you are welcome to add the following categories:

  • Projects

  • Voluntary work

  • Hobbies

  • Portfolio

How do you format a resume?

There are three common CV formats:

In 99% of the cases, you should prefer the reverse chronological order. This is the format most resumes use. The focus is on your professional experience, which is listed in reverse chronological order.

Therefore, we recommend that you stick with this format unless you are considering a career change.

How long should the resume be?

Oh, the most common question about a résumé: How long should my résumé be?

The short answer: a page. If you have a lot of work experience (10 years +), it sometimes makes sense to write a MAXIMUM of 2 pages if everything is extremely relevant to the position you are aiming for.

P.S. All of our templates are one-page resume templates. So it shouldn't be too difficult for you to limit your résumé to one page.

How do you write a short profile?

Your short profile is a kind of lead story that is on top of your life course. It is the introduction to your résumé, so to speak. In 2-4 sentences it should briefly describe your professional background and explain why your profile fits the desired position well.

Do you want your resume to stand out from the rest? Use this proven formula:

"Professional [Job title] with X + years of professional experience in [Area of ​​responsibility]. For the past Y years I have [your 1-2 top performances]. Looking for a job as a [Job title] at [Company name]"

How do you indicate your work experience on your résumé

Putting work experience on your résumé is one of those things that are easy to learn but difficult to master.

Each work experience entry should include:

  • Job title

  • Company name / description / location

  • Special services or areas of responsibility

  • Employed from ... to ...

Well if you an attractive section on professional experience you should focus on quantifiable performance. That is, instead of writing the following:

"Implementation of sales activities"

Should you represent a special achievement:

"I've met and exceeded the sales KPIs for 5 months in a row."

How do you write a cover letter that matches your résumé?

Every application needs (in addition to the résumé) a cover letter. Here are some tips from us on how to do it right:

  • Match your cover letter to each job offer. The more individualized, the more likely that HR managers will become aware of your application.

  • Briefly summarize your professional career (work experience, occupation, etc.) and add 2-3 top achievements to highlight your skills.

What is the best resume template?

There is simply no such thing as a "best resume template" - every recruiter or employer has his or her own preferences. We therefore recommend that you inform yourself well about the company in advance in order to find out what its values ​​are.

For example, if you are applying for a job at a bank, you should use a professional template. Conversely, if you are aiming for a job at a start-up that places more emphasis on innovation, you should use a creative resume template.

Finally, if you're still not sure which template is right for the job you want, you can always play it safe and use a simple resume template.
