SUPPLEMENT: PRACTICE

Dtsch Arztebl 2008; 105 (9): [15]
A study commissioned by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, an organization of well-known cell phone manufacturers, suggests that radiation from cell phones can have negative effects on the human body (www.mmfai.org). The study found that using cell phones before bed affected the quality of sleep and could trigger headaches, difficulty concentrating and depression, the Independent newspaper reported. The study was carried out by the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden together with Wayne State University in Michigan, USA. The scientists studied 35 men and 36 women aged 18 to 45 years. One group of participants was exposed to radiation of 884 MHz, which corresponds to that of cell phones, another group was not exposed to radiation under the same conditions. Study participants in the first group took longer to get into the first phase of deep sleep and stayed shorter in the deepest phase. The researchers suspect that the radiation activates the brain's stress system, making people more concentrated, which leads to sleep problems. The methodology of the study was criticized, among others, by the clients, but other studies on this phenomenon came to similar results. EB
