The Big burdock are biennial plants with a strikingly strong stem. The flowers of the burdock do not develop until the second year, they sit in large flower heads that are surrounded by hooked, curved bracts. For some people they are Burdock annoying plants, while others use the burdock as a vegetable that has a taste reminiscent of salsify. The versatile medicinal properties of Burdock were already known in ancient times. The leaves of the Big burdock should have a germicidal effect, they are applied externally, in crushed form, as compresses for some skin diseases. Even today in naturopathy, an essence prepared from the root is used externally for skin diseases and internally for a number of other health disorders. From the seeds of the Big burdock a fatty oil is extracted for medicinal purposes.

Depending on the location, the Big burdock 50 to 200 cm high. The sturdy stems of these plants are serrated. The large, heart-shaped leaves are petiolate. The leaf margin is serrated. The upper side of the leaf is colored green, the underside of the leaf is white-gray and tomentose. The heyday of Big burdock extends from July to September. The pink - purple flowers form in large, loose, mock umbels, arranged in small heads. The stalked heads are spherical and surrounded by green, pointed bracts. The root of one Big burdock is long and spindle-shaped. The taste of these plants is bitter-sweet.
