Along with truffles, morels are considered the best edible mushrooms. What all types of morels have in common, as well as the closely related Verpeln, is that they can only be found in early spring.
The pointed morel grows on pine bark and is not uncommon in gardens that have been mulched with it. The common morel, which only occurs on alkaline soils with a higher moisture content, is rarer. There aren't many of these in Berlin-Brandenburg, one is in Märkische Schweiz and I actually find morels here on a regular basis.
Unlike the morels, all of which are edible, there are some deadly poisonous species among the similar lorels. In the morning we will first look at a workshop in the Swiss house in Buckow how one can safely distinguish between these two groups of mushrooms.

Anyone who does not want to search for mushrooms at random, but rather collect them in the right place at the right time, will think about their ecology. In the workshop, we therefore first deal with the different diets of mushrooms, because of course a certain type can only be found where it can find the nutrients it needs.
While the weather decides when a type of fruiting body forms, the climatic conditions are relevant for their basic occurrence. The nature of the soil is still decisive for this. So-called pointer plants help us to recognize these, which give us very precise information about the soil quality. We therefore deal a little with the aspects of geology and plant sociology that are important to us.

All theory is gray and that's why after the lunch break we start an excursion through the fantastic landscape of Märkische Schweiz to experience what we have learned in person. The area of ​​Brandenburg with the greatest relief impresses with a grandiose view of hills like the Dachsberg, the dry valleys called "Kehlen" here, such as the Silberkehle, ice-age dead ponds such as the small and large Tornowsee and the floodplain landscape of the Stöbber, which forms a watershed on a high plateau and thus drains the Barnim to both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
The forces of the last ice age have thoroughly hammered the ground and so there are both acidic silicate soils as well as sections rich in bases.

Correspondingly, we find acid indicators like the bilberry in one valley and behind the next hill a green undulating sea of ​​lime indicating plants like liverwort and yellow anemone as well as the parasitic scale root. If you are not only interested in the culinary aspect of the admittedly damn delicious morels, you will also enjoy the extremely rare species of Lorchel-like such as the shield-shaped Lorchel or the Zipfel-Lorchel that occur here.
There will be a small exam at the end of the seminar. You will easily pass this if you follow my explanations carefully. But even if you fail the exam, you would not be worse off than if you had not passed it. For data protection reasons, I will not make the results public on site, but will send you an individual email along with a certificate.
