There are five coin series of the State of Vatican City in circulation; all are valid.

The first series, which was issued between 2002 and 2005, bears the portrait of Pope John Paul II.

The second series, which was issued between June 2005 and March 2006, shows in the central motif the coat of arms of the Cardinal Chamberlain, the acting head of the Vatican City State, below the emblem of the Apostolic Chamber. The words "SEDE VACANTE" and the year of issue "MMV" in Roman numerals surround the upper part of the motif in a semicircle. The name of the designer, “D. LONGO ”can be seen on the left below the centrally arranged motif, while the initials of the respective engraver, i. H. “MAC inc” (1 and 20 cent coins), “LDS inc” (2 and 50 cent coins), “ELF inc” (5 cent and 1 € coins) and “MCC inc “(10 cent and 2 € coin), can be found at the bottom right on the inner edge of the coin.

The third series, issued between April 2006 and December 2013, shows Pope Benedict XVI. On the left are the designer's initials, "DL".

The fourth series, which was first issued in January 2014, bears the portrait of Pope Francis.

The fifth series, which was first issued in March 2017, shows the coat of arms of the head of state of the Vatican City State, Pope Francis.

The twelve stars of the European Union, the words “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO”, the year of issue and the mint mark “R” can be seen on the coins of all series.
