Candida is a fungus found in people's intestines or on the mucous membranes. The candida fungus is harmless in small quantities. "If the colonization gets out of hand, however, there are some doctors who believe that this can favor a wide variety of diseases - from intestinal diseases to respiratory infections -" says oecotrophologist Marin from Berlin.

An excessive colonization of Candida can occur after taking antibiotics: This is because the intestinal flora is attacked, is no longer in its original state and the fungus can spread. In order to suppress the pathological Candida infestation, the Candida diet offers itself.

How does the candida diet work?

In the candida diet, you should avoid sugar if possible. Because in this way you deprive the fungus of the nutrients it needs to multiply. Also taboo are:

  • White bread, rolls
  • Pasta
  • rice
  • cake
  • Sausages
  • Fast food
  • Ready meals

According to the expert, deficiency symptoms during the diet are excluded if you eat a balanced and preferably plant-based diet. "If you eat five servings of fruits and vegetables, as recommended, two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables, you can eat fruit on the candida diet - although sugar should be avoided."

In order to rebuild the intestinal flora, sour milk products and lactic acid products such as:

  • yogurt

  • kefir
  • Curdled milk

In addition to the candida diet, you can also do an intestinal rehabilitation. "There are special bacterial cultures that you can get from the pharmacy. It is best to get advice from a doctor beforehand. He can check whether there is excessive Candida colonization," recommends Marin.

For whom the diet is suitable

The candida diet is only suitable for healthy adults. "If you are sick or have undiscovered diseases, it can possibly become problematic," warns the nutrition expert. Because a diet is always a change for the body. Therefore, a doctor should always be consulted in advance of a diet.

Can you lose weight with the candida diet?

If you want to lose weight, you need to save calories. However, this is not the focus of the Candida diet. Instead, the focus is on relieving or positively influencing the metabolism and reducing the Candida colonization within normal limits. "However, if you change your diet so that you consume less sugar and fewer white flour products, you will very likely lose weight on the side," says Marin.

This is how long you should go on the diet

Intestinal rehabilitation, as with the candida diet, should run for at least four weeks. "Some doctors even say you should do it for at least six months," the expert knows. Her advice, however, is: "I would say that if you have been on a four-week diet, you should have the result checked again by a doctor if possible. If the Candida colonization has not yet receded, then you can certainly go on for another month - even at to see how it develops and how you feel about it. "

This is what makes a good diet
