There are a number of things you can do wrong when brushing your teeth, starting with your choice of toothbrush. “Stiftung Warentest” took a close look at 13 electric brushes. The result is gratifying: good models are not necessarily expensive.

They rotate, they vibrate and thus ensure convenient and easy tooth cleaning: electric toothbrushes. They are now part of the basic equipment in many bathrooms.

But which is the best? The German consumer magazine sent 13 electric toothbrushes to the test laboratory, including both rotating and sound-active models. The brushes had to convince in the following categories:

  • Teeth cleaning (60%)
  • Handling (30%)
  • Durability, environmental properties (10%)

Six of them did their job “well”, four were “satisfactory” and two were “sufficient”. One toothbrush failed with “poor”.

All of them criticized the fact that the battery is not replaceable - if it ever gives up, a new device has to be bought.

What care do toothbrushes need?

What is used every day must be handled properly. The "Stiftung Warentest" therefore recommends washing the brushes with water after cleaning and storing them in a dry place. For electric toothbrushes, the attachment should be removed.

In general, consumers should replace their toothbrushes and attachments every two to three months. Unfortunately, most of the time, the more expensive the device itself, the more expensive the replacement brush. Tip: Buy large packs, this saves a lot of money.

Even inexpensive models are "good" in the test

An interesting fact: brushes with rotating heads as well as brushes with sound that move through vibration performed well.

The test winner was Sonicare 9300 Diamond Clean Smart from Philips. It offers some gadgets, such as a smartphone app. However, this is reflected in the price. It costs almost 240 francs.

But good doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. Significantly cheaper and simpler models were also able to convince in the test - for example Oral-B Pro 900 Sensi Ultra Thin from Braun. It costs 55 francs and thus 180 francs less than the test winner - and scores almost as well in the test. Also good and inexpensive: Silk'n Sonic Smile and Oral-B Pro 700 deep cleansing.
