Recall from Mercedes: Risk of fire in the C-Class and GLC

Because of a possible fault in the fire protection system, Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 120,000 cars in Germany. Models of certain series must be checked in the workshop.

  • C-Class and GLC series from 2016 to 2020 affected

  • Faults in the lines from the fire protection system

  • According to KBA, no incidents with personal injury or property damage are known to date

The reason for the recall is a possible one incorrect connection of lines in the so-called inerting system, as a Mercedes spokesman confirmed. This is used to distribute argon gas in the event of an accident so that the R1234yf refrigerant in the air conditioning does not catch fire if it comes into contact with hot engine parts.

So far, no incidents with personal injury

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 264,393 C-Class and GLC vehicles built between 2016 and 2020 are affected worldwide, 120,766 of them in Germany. The cars are supposed to be checked in the workshop and possible faults on the gas pipes to be repaired. The KBA has set up the hotline on 00800 12777777 for any queries. The manufacturer's code for the recall is: 6290101. According to the KBA, no incidents involving personal injury or property damage are known to date.

Mercedes has long rejected R1234yf refrigerant

After the use of another refrigerant was banned, Daimler had long refused to R1234yf to use. The Stuttgart-based car manufacturer saw the danger that in the event of ignition, for example in an accident toxic gases arise. That is why the inerting system was developed.

According to the speaker, the R1234yf refrigerant is no longer necessary in current vehicles due to a completely different architecture.
