In 1981 he was appointed head of the newly founded Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and Organization IAO in Stuttgart. Since July 1982, Hans-Jörg Bullinger has been a full professor for ergonomics at the University of Stuttgart. At the beginning of 1991 he became head of the newly established Institute for Ergonomics and Technology Management at the University of Stuttgart, which is linked to the Fraunhofer IAO by a cooperation agreement.

In addition to numerous national and international awards, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Novi Sad, an honorary professorship from the University of Science and Technology of China and an honorary membership of the Romanian Society for Mechanical Engineers.

On July 21, 1998, Prof. Bullinger received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his outstanding services to science, economy and society in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Jürgen Warnecke had been a full professor and holder of the chair for industrial production and factory operations at the University of Stuttgart since 1971 and head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering and Automation (IPA). His main areas of work are corporate planning and control, automation, assembly, handling technology, maintenance, quality management, and measurement and sensor technology. In 1993 Warnecke retired. From 1993 to 2002 he was President of the Fraunhofer Society. In addition, he was President of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) in Düsseldorf from 1995 to 1997. Hans-Jürgen Warnecke received an honorary doctorate from the Universities of Magdeburg, Ljubljana and Timisoara as well as an honorary professorship from the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai and the Baotou University
