How to get deleted (or archived) email in Gmail

They know you got an important email from your boss, but the message is no longer in your Gmail inbox. Perhaps in your rush to clear your inbox, accidentally deleted an email that you really need? It could easily happen.

What should you do now You need to find the missing Gmail message. Don't panic first. You are probably worried about having to get in touch with your boss and admit that you deleted their email. How embarrassing!

But with Gmail, you might not have to bother your boss at all. There are several methods that you can use to recover deleted emails in Gmail or other missing messages.

This tutorial describes the different ways to recover deleted emails. You will learn how to get deleted email from Gmail. We will look at how archived email can be accessed. We'll also explore why archiving old emails might be better than deleting those emails, especially if you're not sure if you will need a message in the future.

1. Find and restore a deleted Gmail email from the trash

If an email has been deleted, it is likely in the rubbish Folder. If you haven't permanently deleted the email, you can restore it from the website rubbish Folder if it has been in the folder for less than 30 days. Gmail messages that have been in the folder for a long time are automatically deleted.

This section will teach you how to find and recover an accidentally deleted Gmail.

Step 1. Find the trash can and open it

When you first open your Gmail inbox, it can look something like this:

First, open your Gmail inbox.

As you can see that rubbish Folder is not visible. Click to find it More Option on the left side of the screen. Your menu options expand:

Next, find your Gmail account and open it rubbish Folder.

Your rubbish Folder appears in the menu. Press the rubbish Option to open the folder:

Step 2. Use Gmail Search to retrieve deleted emails from Gmail

You may be able to view your missing Gmail message as soon as you get the rubbish Folder. If so, good for you.

But when you have a lot of emails in your mailbox rubbish In this folder, it may take more effort to retrieve your deleted email message. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the screen to move through the emails on your screen. If there is more than one message screen, use the left and right arrows in the top right of your screen to move through the screens:

However, scrolling through the screens of email messages in this way can be time consuming. There is an easier way. You can use the Gmail search bar to find your missing message in rubbish Folder. First, click the down arrow to the right of the search bar. The Advanced Search Dialog box is displayed:

The best way to find your missing message is by looking at what you know about it in the search boxes in the Advanced Search Dialog box.

In this example, I'm looking for an email that was sent in May of the year about an upcoming conference. I enter the information in the search fields:

Top: The more information you enter in the dialog box, the more narrow your search will be. However, be careful not to enter wrong information or you will not be able to retrieve your deleted emails.

When you have entered the information, click search (it looks like a magnifying glass) in the lower left corner of the dialog box. The search results are displayed:

All messages that match your search parameters will be displayed.

In this case, the search parameters were so precise that the missing email message was returned. If more than one email meets the search criteria, multiple messages will be displayed on this screen.

Step 3. Recover Deleted Email from Gmail

Now that we've found our missing email, it's time to get it off the internet rubbish Folder. To do this, check the box to the right of the email to select it. Your screen should look like this:

Press the Move to inbox Button above the message. Your email is being moved from rubbish Folder in your Gmail inbox. You just learned how to get deleted email from Gmail.

2. How to restore permanently deleted emails

If your deleted Gmail email message isn't in the trash, it is likely that it has been permanently deleted. There are several ways this can happen:

  • You emptied yours rubbish Folder.
  • You have selected the message in your rubbish Folder and clicked on the Delete irrevocably Button.
  • The email was automatically deleted rubbish Folder after 30 days.

If you've accidentally permanently deleted an email (or messages), the Gmail email may still be on one of Google's servers. There is a possibility that you can recover a permanently deleted email with the help of Google support.

Here's what to do:

Step 1. Gather information

Gather as much information as you can about the missing Gmail emails. Here are some details you will need:

  • Your Gmail address
  • When the Gmail (s) are gone (approximately)
  • Details of the steps you took to try and retrieve the deleted emails

Step 2. Contact Google support

Enter this URL in the address field of your browser: support.google.com/mail/contact/missingemails

Complete the fields on the Gmail Help screen that appears. After you've entered all of your information, click Submit to send your request to Google support.

Attention: There is no guarantee that Google Support will be able to recover your deleted Gmail emails. So it's better to archive an old Gmail message than to delete it. In the next section, we will learn how to check email archived in Gmail.

3. Access to archived email in Gmail

Avoid the frustration of permanently losing a Gmail email by using Gmail archive Characteristic. Archiving old messages is better than deleting them. Archived Gmails are not automatically deleted after 30 days. Knowing what to do, you can easily recover an archived Gmail email.

You may be concerned that your Gmail archive is taking up your available Google storage. Note, however, that even a free Google Account comes with 15GB of storage (shared by Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos). So chances are, you won't be filling your Google storage with archived messages anytime soon. Plus, you can buy additional storage if you really need it.

If you don't know how to archive a Gmail message, it's easy. Just select the email you want to archive in your inbox and click archive Button in the toolbar above the messages:

To restore an archived email message:

Step 1. Retrieve Archived Gmail

You can't open your Gmail archive the way you can open it rubbish Folder. However, that doesn't mean you can't access archived email in Gmail.

You can find Gmail emails in your archive with the Any post Possibility. Start by opening your Gmail inbox. click More Links from your Gmail emails to expand your options. Here is a screen with the advanced options:

Press the Any post Possibility. All of the email on your Gmail system will appear, including archived messages:

All the emails in your Gmail system will be displayed rubbish or Spam Folder.

Important:Any post does not show any messages in your Spam or rubbish Folder.

Use the scroll bar to the right to scroll through the Gmail email messages and find the archived email address that you are looking for.

Step 2. Access to archived emails

Use of Any post This option allows you to get an archived Gmail email if you don't have a lot of emails in your archive.

If your Gmail archive is full, using Gmail will save you time Advanced Search Tool. The process is very similar to the method we used search Tool to find Gmail emails in your rubbish Folder.

With the Gmail inbox open, click the down arrow to the right of the search bar. The Advanced Search Dialog box is displayed:

Make sure the search Parameter at the top of the dialog box is set to Any post.

In this example, I lost an important meeting notification. I type the word "meet" into that Has the words Field on the Advanced Search Dialog box. I'm not sure when the email was sent Date within Parameters too within a year.

When you have entered the information, click search (it looks like a magnifying glass) in the lower left corner of the dialog box. The search results are displayed:

The search results will help you restore archived emails to Gmail.

In this case the search parameters were general and returned multiple Gmail emails with the word "meeting" in the email. However, the email I was trying to get from the Gmail archive is showing up at the top of the screen.

Step 3. Move archived Gmails to your inbox

Now that we have learned how to get archived emails in Gmail, now it's time to put the retrieved messages back into Gmail inbox. To do this, check the box to the right of the email to select it. Your screen should look like this:

Press the Move to inbox Button above the email messages. Your email address will be moved from the Gmail archives to your Gmail inbox. You just learned how to get and restore archived email in Gmail.

4. How to retrieve a Gmail email from the spam folder

There's one last place to look for your missed Gmail email. It can be in yours Spam Folder. Usually the emails in your Spam Folders are junk you don't need to worry about, but sometimes important emails mistakenly land.

The link to your Spam Folder is under the Any post Shortcut:

Sometimes messages are sent to Gmail by mistake Spam Folder.

Open the Spam Filter, click the link. The Spam Folder opens. To retrieve a Gmail email message found in Spam, check the box to the left of the email. Press the No spam Button at the top of the screen to which the message should be sent Any post. Or move the selected email directly to your inbox or another email folder.

Warning: Messages in your Spam Folders are automatically deleted after 30 days. So if the message you were looking for was sent to Spam more than a month ago, it is not in your folder.
