What is Vinyasa Yoga?

How does Vinyasa Yoga work?

Vinyasa Yoga is based on three pillars:

  1. Movements and breathing flow synchronously: The dynamic asanas are combined with a controlled breathing technique, the so-called Ujjayi breathing. The principle is that the movements always follow the breath and not the other way around.
  2. Everything is in the river: In Vinyasa Yoga just as much attention is paid to the path from one posture to the next as to the asanas themselves. All elements are interlinked, resulting in a flow.

Alternatives to Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga is too dynamic or creative for you? Are you looking for a calmer or more structured yoga style? Then one of these directions might suit you better:

  • Hatha yoga: In Hatha Yoga, strengthening physical exercises in connection with conscious breathing are in the foreground. The yoga style is calm and rather static compared to Vinyasa Yoga. It is switched between individual poses without flowing sequences. In a Hatha yoga course you will learn the most important basics - ideal if you are a beginner.
  • Ashtanga Yoga: Ashtanga Yoga is similar to Vinyasa Yoga, but adheres to fixed rules. There are six series of exercises that are repeated every hour - without a break and in fast-moving changes. This style of yoga is more suitable for advanced yogis for whom structure and performance optimization are important.
  • Power yoga: Power Yoga is a variant of Ashtanga Yoga, only that the exercises here are adapted to the level of the practitioner. In this respect, this yoga style is an intermediate form - less regulated than Ashtanga, but not quite as creative and flowing as Vinyasa.
