What is rooibos tea

Taste and origin

Rooibos tea, often also called red bush tea in German-speaking countries, is made from the rooibos plant. It belongs to the legume family of plants. The Rooibos plant originally comes from the South African province of Westkamp and grows there in the western mountain regions. Strictly speaking, rooibos tea is not a tea, as it is not obtained from a tea plant like other types of tea. Rooibos tea is made from its fine needle-like leaves. For this purpose, the twigs are dried in the sun after the harvest and then chopped up. Rooibos tea differs from other types of tea in particular through its sweet and fruity taste. With their dark red color, the infusions are often reminiscent of black tea.

Effect and health

Rooisbos tea has been drunk in its region of origin for a very long time and is used there to treat abdominal pain and nausea. Rooisbos tea is particularly suitable for children and sensitive people as it contains no caffeine, only a few tannins and very little fluorine. Although there are only a few scientific studies on the effects of rooibos tea, it is often consumed because of its calming and sleep-promoting effects. Rooibos tea is rich in vitamin C. In order not to destroy the vitamin C through the infusion, the water should not be above 75 ° C if possible. The brewing time is approximately 5 minutes. However, due to the very low tannin content of rooibos tea, it can steep longer without becoming bitter.
