iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen

Learn what to do if your device screen freezes, doesn't respond to touch, or hangs after turning it on.

Screen is black or frozen

If the screen is black or frozen, you may need to force restart the device. A forced restart will not delete the content on the device. You can force restart the device even if the screen is black or the buttons are unresponsive. Method:

  • iPad models without the "Home" button: Briefly press the "Volume up" button. Press the volume down button and release it immediately. Then press and hold the power button until the device restarts.
  • iPhone 8 or later: press the volume up button and release it immediately. Press the volume down button and release it immediately. Then press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold the side button or the top button and the volume down button at the same time until you see the Apple logo.
  • iPad with Home button, iPhone 6s or earlier, and iPod touch (6th generation) or older: Press and hold the Home button and the side button or the top button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

The device still cannot be switched on or started

Plug the device into a power source and let it charge for an hour.

After a few minutes, you should see the loading screen.

If the charging screen does not appear within an hour or the "Connect to AC Power" screen appears, check the connection, USB cable, and power adapter. Make sure everything is securely connected, free of debris, and undamaged. If you have a replacement USB cable or power adapter on hand, we recommend trying this one.

The device turns on but does not complete the startup process

If you see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen during startup, do the following:

  1. Connect the device to a computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15, open Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes.
  2. Find the device on your computer.
  3. While the device is connected, do the following:
    • iPad models without the "Home" button: Briefly press the "Volume up" button. Press the volume down button and release it immediately. Press and hold the standby button until the device restarts. Continue to hold the standby button until the device goes into recovery mode.
    • iPhone 8 or later: press the volume up button and release it immediately. Press the volume down button and release it immediately. Then press and hold the side button until you see the recovery mode screen.
    • iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold the side or top button and the volume down button at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen.
    • iPad with the "Home" button, iPhone 6s or older and iPod touch (6th generation) or older: Press and hold the "Home" button and the side button or the top button at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen.
  4. When given the opportunity to restore or update, select "Update". Your computer tries to reinstall iOS or iPadOS without erasing your data.

Your computer loads the software for your device. If the charging process takes more than 15 minutes, the device will exit recovery mode and you will need to repeat steps 2 and 3.
