Sparkling carbon dioxide and the typical cola taste make the brown soda so popular and lots of myths make it so interesting. We have put the most important (half) truths and rumors about cola to the test for you.

Cocaine in Cola

For example, some are still convinced that cola used to contain real cocaine. Around 8.5 milligrams of the drug are said to have been in every glass of cola. Not true, Cola never contained cocaine, according to the largest cola producer.

Coca leaf in the original recipe of Cola

An original recipe for Cola, the French Wine Coca, is said to have actually included cocaine extract from coca leaves. That makes sense, because the name "Coca" for the brown lemonade must come from somewhere. Coca extracts from which the drug had been withdrawn were later used. Incidentally, the name Cola refers to the kola nut, the extracts of which contain caffeine and also belonged to the French Wine Coca. The recipe dates back to 1886. Instead of the natural cola nut, most cola manufacturers now use cheap caffeine from coffee production.

And what's the current recipe for cola? The recipe is top secret. All that is known is that the typical taste is said to come from seven oils, including those made from coriander, cinnamon and bitter oranges.

Cola eats away meat

Soak a piece of meat in cola overnight and the next day there are only gray scraps left. Everyone knows this cola myth. However, this is actually just a legend. Because the soft drink does not destroy meat, nor does it attack the stomach, as is often claimed.

A glass of cola contains 40 sugar cubes

That's not true. 200 milliliters of cola contain "only" 20 grams of sugar, which corresponds to about eight sugar cubes.

Cola is the most sugar-rich drink

With this amount, cola is said to be the most sugar-rich drink. But even this myth misses the truth. Iced tea and various fruit juices contain up to 50 percent more sugar than cola.

Cola causes diabetes

Even if cola is not the sugarsiest drink of all, people who drink a lot of cola get diabetes, according to popular belief. That's not true. Because a sugar-rich drink alone hardly triggers diabetes. However, too much sugar makes you fat. And obesity plus a sedentary lifestyle are the most important risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

"Cola Light" or "Cola Zero" are healthier

In terms of sugar content, both types of cola are actually healthier. They contain artificial sweeteners and therefore no or very few calories. However, these diet drinks are also not without problems. For example, there is a risk that sweeteners will stimulate the appetite and thus indirectly make you fat.

"Cola Life" with stevia is a low-calorie alternative

A new variant has recently appeared on the German market: "Cola Life" is sweetened with stevia. But it still contains 33 instead of 38 kilocalories (normal cola) per 100 milliliters and can therefore hardly be described as low in calories. In addition, the slightly licorice-like and bitter aftertaste of stevia is not for everyone.

Cola helps against diarrhea

Cola plus pretzel sticks are a popular home remedy for diarrhea. However, it has not been medically proven that cola calms the intestines. The opposite is more likely to occur: because too much sugar (cola) and too much salt (pretzel sticks) only irritate the intestine. That is why most doctors reject the home remedy, which is especially popular with children.

Cola weakens the bones and leads to osteoporosis

Right. The combination of sugar, caffeine, and phosphoric acid can make bones porous. Phosphoric acid in particular is considered to rob calcium and deprives the bones of this valuable building block. Because light versions of cola also contain phosphoric acid, they are also not harmless in this context. However, the consumption of cola drinks must be extremely high in order to favor osteoporosis.

Cola damages teeth

Teeth certainly don't look that bad if you drink cola regularly. What is certain, however, is that the sugar it contains fatten the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Anyone who switches to cola with sweetener has averted only one of three dangers for the teeth: Because light cola also contains phosphoric and carbonic acid. Both acids attack tooth enamel when consumed in excess.

Cola makes you nervous

If you drink a lot of Coke, you should get fidgety and nervous. The cause is the caffeine in the brown shower head. That's the myth. Coke contains caffeine, but not enough to make an adult nervous about consuming it sensibly. For children, however, this can be true. They are more sensitive to the pick-me-up.

Cola contains more caffeine than coffee

Cola contains only ten milligrams of caffeine per 100 milliliters, while coffee contains considerably more, namely an average of 80 milligrams in the same amount of drink, depending on the preparation. Cola is not as big a caffeine bomb as the drink is often said to be.

Cola has more caffeine than black tea

This myth is also wrong. Black tea contains around 35 milligrams of caffeine per 100 milliliters, which is more than three times as much as cola.

Cola as a contraceptive

The rumor persists that vaginal douching with cola prevents pregnancy after sex. But that's not true. Cola does not kill sperm and vaginal douching is generally not a safe method of contraception, not even with liquids other than cola.
