Undertale (stylized as UNDERTALE and earlier than UnderTale) is a role-playing game (RPG) that was created independently by Toby Fox and with the additional help of Temmie Chang with the Game Maker: Engine. It was released on September 15, 2015 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux on GOG and Steam (Linux version only on GOG). The game was received extremely positively and was able to build a large, active community within a very short time.

Gameplay [edit | Edit source]

Undertale is an RPG that takes traditional RPG mechanics and changes them slightly.

The combat system in Undertale is turn-based and seems to have been very inspired by Bullet Hell games - especially those from the Touhou series. The protagonist is represented as a red heart, as his SOUL, and has to avoid the attacks of his enemies. As the game progresses, new elements are introduced, such as colored attacks that require the player to either stand still or move to dodge, or opponents who control the way the heart can be controlled. When it is the player's turn, he has the option to attack his enemy (this includes pressing certain buttons at a convenient time), to act in such a way that he changes the mood of his counterpart, to use items, or to show mercy and the enemy thus to spare, if certain conditions have been met. If an enemy is killed, the player receives EXP and LV; however, these cannot be obtained if one spares the enemy. GOLD, on the other hand, can be given to the protagonist after a fight in both cases. The game places a very strong emphasis on the morale between killing and sparing the monsters, as these actions determine which end the player reaches. Unlike traditional RPGs, it is possible to Undertale without killing a single monster.

The world in Undertale consists mainly of small puzzles that the player must solve in order to advance. The fights against monsters can also be seen as a puzzle, as you always have to carry out a sequence of correct actions in order to resolve the conflict peacefully. However, if the player decides to murder every single monster, almost all puzzles are disabled and the player has to grind to advance in the game. In contrast to traditional RPGs, grinding (under neutral conditions) and backtracking are not mandatory and there are no real side quests.

The game is also known for its original and humorous dialogues, the drastic changes a player can bring about through their actions and the occasional breach of the fourth wall. Killing / sparing leads to significantly different dialogues, but the most outstanding changes are those that appear when the player manipulates the SAVE function, switches off the game in the middle or resets it: Almost all of the main characters have knowledge of what the player has in his previous ones Has done or not done rounds of the game.

Undertale also includes hidden secrets that can only be found by hacking the game.

Main story Edit source]

Long ago two races ruled the earth: humans and monsters. One day a war broke out between the two races and after a long series of battles the people were victorious. Their greatest magicians sealed the monsters underground using a magical barrier. However, this is far from perfect and can be broken with enough power.

Many years later, in 20XX, a human climbed Mount Ebott for some mysterious reason. It is said that those who climb the mountain never come back. The child discovers a huge cave in the mountain and falls into it while trying to examine it more closely. After this story, the real game begins.

The protagonist, who, according to the developer’s suggestions, should be named after the player himself[1], begins his adventure in the ruins and shortly afterwards meets Flowey, a sensitive-looking flower who tries to kill the protagonist. However, his plans are thwarted by a maternal monster named Toriel, who teaches the player how to solve the puzzles of the underground and end conflicts non-violently. After fighting her, she allows the child to leave the ruins and begin the real game.

Development [edit | Edit source]

The oldest screenshots of Undertale were uploaded to Starmen.net in a non-serious thread of the PK hack. Toby "Radiation" Fox claimed there that the game was a EarthBoundROM hack called UnderBound 2 should be.[2]

The first known demo of Undertale became the website Fangamer, which sells video game merchandise, was sent to it on May 2, 2013[3] could be played. The game received positive feedback, causing a public demo later on May 23, 2013[4] has been published.

Later should Undertale in the form of a Kickstarter campaign with the help of $ 5,000 so that it can become a real game. In the end, a total of $ 51,124 was raised from a total of 2,398 backers. Because of the game's short length, Toby Fox expected it to be ready in August 2014.
