Coronavirus: Visa and Entry to Cambodia (Changes and Restrictions)

On May 20, 2020, the general entry ban for German citizens was lifted. In terms of tourist travel, however, nothing will change for the time being.

Since June 2020 it has been possible to enter Cambodia again, but no e-visas, no visas on arrival and no tourist visas issued.

A Cambodia visa through the embassy is only available for business / business travelers (this probably includes volunteer work).

According to the embassy and, the following documents are also required:

  • A copy of the health insurance for at least US $ 50,000 including Corona. Such insurance should also be available from local companies, for example from the Forte agency (there is no personal experience on this).
  • Do not forget the corona test max 72 hours before departure!

According to the German Foreign Office, the following measures can also be expected on site:

  • Upon arrival in Cambodia, all travelers must undergo a COVID-19 test. The result is to be awaited in a designated area. The evaluation of the tests can take up to 24 hours.
  • If one of the travelers tests positive for COVID-19, all travelers on the same flight are obliged to a 14-day quarantine in a state facility.
  • If all travelers on the same flight test negative, a quarantine will be ordered in their own home and checked by the local authorities.
  • The Covid-19 test as well as any treatment and accommodation are to be borne by the traveler himself. According to the Cambodian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, the costs can range between USD 165 (Covid-19 test) and approx. USD 2,000 (treatment / accommodation). The 2,000 USD must be deposited as a deposit upon entry. Update: The test now only costs 100 USD.

This official page lists all treatment costs, from $ 5 for transportation to quarantine to $ 1,500 for burial.

For travelers who are still in the country:

The government of Cambodia has announced that the tourist visa for travelers who cannot leave the country due to the Corona crisis will be extended automatically. Here are all the conditions.

Repatriation program:

The German government's return program for Cambodia has been completed. A total of two flights to Frankfurt / Main took place on March 29, 2020. All Germans who had previously registered were informed of their flights.

Air traffic to Cambodia

There is currently no air traffic from Europe to Cambodia, but there are individual connections from other Asian countries via which a return flight to Europe is possible (e.g. via Singapore or Seoul).

Transit via Singapore has been possible since September 1st, 2020 (only with Singapore Airlines, Silk Air, Scoot).

National borders

All borders with neighboring countries Thailand, Laos and Vietnam are closed until further notice (except for the movement of goods).

Corona in Cambodia: Information on the current situation in the country

Curfews

There is currently a curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. in some cities across the country, including Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

In addition, there have recently been lockdowns in Phnom Penh and the province of Sihanoukville.

Public life

There have been numerous restrictions in the last few weeks, especially in the areas affected by infections. Night clubs and karaoke bars are closed and the sale of alcohol is prohibited. Violations can result in fines and imprisonment.

Transport and traffic

Depending on the infection, there may be restrictions. This also includes the sealing off of cities and provinces.

Cambodia vacation despite Corona?

When can I go on vacation to Cambodia again?

Only business visas are currently being issued. Entry as a tourist is not possible, but it may be as a volunteer with appropriate approval.

Therefore, the hotels and resorts are only left with domestic tourism, for which hygiene and safety guidelines must be followed, otherwise there is a risk of the tourism license being suspended. The requirements include measures to ensure the safety of tourists, to set up the facilities and to train employees.

Particular emphasis is placed on practicing social distancing among visitors, providing hygiene supplies and limiting the number of guests for resorts and passengers in transport.

There is not yet a date from when tourists can visit the sights in places like Angkor or Phnom Penh again.

Shortly after the outbreak of the pandemic, the President of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agencies does not expect long-distance tourism to return until mid / end of 2021. So far, around 3,000 companies in the travel industry in Cambodia have had to close and around 45,000 people have lost their jobs.

In order to counteract this at least a little, travel bubbles are being considered. Wealthy visitors from “safe” countries, we are talking about the ASEAN countries as well as Japan, South Korea and China, should then be able to re-enter under conditions to be defined. But nothing has been decided yet and in the meantime it has become quite quiet on this issue.

May 19, 2021 Cambodia: Infection numbers drop after tough lockdown

From the end of February there was a slow and then from the beginning of April a strong increase in the number of infections. But since the beginning of May the wave seems to have broken and the numbers are falling.

Especially the people in the province of Sihanoukville and in the capital Phnom Penh have had tough weeks. In the context of a lockdown, the houses could not be left without good reason. According to media reports, there were supply bottlenecks and Amnesty International intervened. Government officials deny that there was a food shortage.

As part of the fight against corona, systematic attempts were made to track down chains of infection with mass tests in the city districts. As of the beginning of this week, there appears to be no more red zones, i.e. high-risk areas, in Phnom Penh. Some restrictions have therefore been withdrawn.

04/30/2021 Cambodia: perspective in the 4th quarter?

In Cambodia, the Ministry of Tourism is working with the Ministry of Health on a plan to allow travelers fully vaccinated against Covid19 into the country in the fourth quarter without (or only with a short) quarantine. However, the discussion is only just beginning.

23.03.2021 Worries in Cambodia

The WHO sees Cambodia at a critical point in the fight against Covid-19. The country is currently experiencing its strongest outbreak since the pandemic began. For the first time, there are also fatalities.

Over the weekend, cinemas, art theaters and museums across the country were ordered to close. The schools had to close beforehand.

March 5th, 2021 Sihanoukville cordoned off

For a few weeks now, there has been the highest number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic with many hotspots. As of this week, the coastal town of Sihanoukville is no longer allowed to enter or leave.

02/23/2021 Cambodia tries to bring the corona outbreak under control

There is a new spike in the number of infections in Cambodia with up to 100 cases daily. It is the worst outbreak yet, according to Prime Minister Hun Sen. There are 23 hotspots, and attempts are currently being made to locate the chains of infection.

In Phnom Penh and Kandal Province, schools, theaters, cinemas and museums must close for at least two weeks.

The vaccination program in Cambodia started two weeks ago. Almost 40,000 people have now been vaccinated.

December 7th, 2020 New restrictions in Cambodia

After a few new Covid-19 infections, the Cambodian government imposed a temporary ban on sports activities at the beginning of the month.

In addition, schools, cinemas and other venues were ordered to be temporarily closed. Weddings and other gatherings with more than 20 people are also prohibited - initially until December 15, 2020.

Overall, the number of proven corona infections is currently 348. Of these, 306 people have recovered.

December 1st, 2020 Cambodia: Quarantine only in state centers

The 14-day quarantine after entry may no longer be carried out privately. Instead, a stay in a state institution is mandatory. Tourist visas are still not issued.

November 13th, 2020 Cambodia: Concern after a positive Corona case during a Hungarian state visit

Numerous people were quarantined after a Cambodian bodyguard protecting Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto tested positive for the virus last weekend.

The Ministry of Health has also ordered the temporary closure of KTVs, nightclubs, cinemas and museums across the country.

The Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Hang Chuon Naron has also announced that all schools in Phnom Penh and Kandal Province will be closed for two weeks to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

October 28, 2020 Cambodia: No opening in sight

Government and tourism experts are discussing ways to let tourists into the country during the COVID19 pandemic. Priority is given to an agreement with China that will make it possible to travel between the two countries. According to Thoun Sinan, President of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, the considerations are still in their infancy.

The neighboring countries Thailand and Vietnam are also being discussed. However, it will be some time before there is a gradual opening.

The Cambodian tourism sector is suffering severely from the consequences of travel restrictions. In the first nine months of the year, the number of international visitors fell by 75% compared to the same period of the previous year.

09/08/2020 Cambodia: Demand remains low

As part of the lockdown, tourist facilities such as hotels, restaurants and tour operators had to close. The restrictions have long been lifted, but to date just 30 percent of companies have reopened. There is a lack of international tourists, and domestic tourism cannot fill the gap.

Foreign nationals entering Cambodia will only have to pay 100 USD per COVID-19 test (previously 165 USD). However, only business travelers can still obtain a visa.

08/05/2020 Cambodia thinks about travel bubbles

The model has been discussed in many Southeast Asian countries for months, and now Cambodia is also thinking about it: We are talking about so-called travel bubbles.

In order to make at least some international tourism possible, wealthy visitors from “safe” countries, we are talking about the countries of Southeast Asia as well as Japan, South Korea and China, should be able to re-enter under conditions to be defined.

But nothing has been decided yet.

Travel bubbles, in which bilateral agreements are concluded between the participating countries, have not yet been implemented in any Southeast Asian country with regard to tourism.

07/30/2020 Cambodia reports 7 new cases

Cambodia reports seven newly imported Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, July 30, 2020, increasing the total number of infections in the country to 233.

07/28/2020 The Ministry of Education today allowed the resumption of all sports and exercise activities in Cambodia

Physical fitness can now be exercised again in public places in the open air as well as in the Olympic Stadium. Of course, the regulated health guidelines such as maintaining the minimum distance and wearing a breathing mask continue to apply.

07/27/2020 Cambodia bans flights from Indonesia and Malaysia

From August 1st, aircraft from Indonesia and Malaysia will no longer be allowed to land in Cambodia. The reason is the increase in imported Covid 19 cases from both countries in the past few weeks.

6/22/2020 $ 3,000 as security deposit upon entry

If you want to enter Cambodia with a business / business visa, you have to deposit a total of 3,000 US dollars as a deposit for any quarantine / treatment due to Covid19.

This Cambodian authorities page lists all (possible) treatment costs, from $ 5 for transport to quarantine to $ 1,500 in the case of a funeral.

Tourism companies are concerned about this requirement.

June 12th, 2020 Entry to Cambodia for tourists is still not possible

At the end of May, it looked like Cambodia would be the first country to reopen its borders to tourists.

After a 14-day quarantine and fulfillment of some other requirements, entry for tourists should be possible. In the meantime, the entry requirements have been defined more precisely. For the time being, only business visas will be issued for business travelers. Tourist trips are still not possible.

The Cambodian embassy in Berlin confirmed this by telephone today.

11.06.2020 The Federal Foreign Office specifies entry information

In its travel and security information, the Federal Foreign Office has for the first time provided information on the costs of the corona test and any necessary quarantine.

The Covid-19 test and any treatment and accommodation must be borne by the traveler himself. According to the Cambodian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, the costs can range between USD 165 (Covid-19 test) and approx. USD 3,000 (treatment / accommodation).

06/09/2020 Clear guidelines for hotels

Hotels and resorts that want to receive tourists again with immediate effect must meet hygiene and safety requirements. The measures focus on three areas: the safety of tourists, the establishment of the facilities and the training of employees.

This includes, among other things, practicing social distancing among visitors, providing hygiene supplies and limiting the number of guests for resorts and passengers in transport.

Companies that do not implement these measures face the risk of their licenses being suspended.

06/09/2020 Beaches in Sihanoukville reopened to visitors.

As the newspaper Khmer Times reports, the beaches at the coastal town of Sihanoukville can now be visited again by national and international tourists.

The governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, Kuoch Chamroeun, said that more than nine kilometers of the beach were opened and the fences were removed.

May 26th, 2020 Entry possible again from June:

Entry should be possible again from June 2020. However, no e-Visa and Visa on arrival are currently being issued.Instead, a Cambodia visa must be applied for at the embassy.

This tourist visa (T) entitles you to visit the country once within the three-month period of validity for a maximum stay of 30 days. A tourist visa costs thirty-five euros per person.

The tourist visa can be extended once in Phnom Penh for a maximum of 30 days. There are extra costs for the extension.
Children must submit their own VISA application for a fee.

According to the embassy, the following documents are also required:

  • a copy of the health insurance for at least US $ 50,000 including Corona
  • Do not forget the corona test max 72 hours before departure !!

According to the German Foreign Office, the following measures can also be expected on site:

  • Upon arrival in Cambodia, all travelers must undergo a COVID-19 test. The result is to be awaited in a designated area. The evaluation of the tests can take up to 24 hours.
  • If one of the travelers tests positive for COVID-19, all travelers on the same flight are required to be quarantined for 14 days in a state facility.
  • If all travelers on the same flight test negative, a quarantine will be ordered in their own home and checked by the local authorities.

However, traveling to Cambodia is currently proving to be difficult, as Bangkok and Singapore, for example, are no longer transit airports. At least Singapore should be from 1.6. but be possible again.

May 20, 2020 Entry ban for German citizens will be lifted

In March, a general entry ban was imposed on people from Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the USA and Iran. According to media reports, this is now being lifted. It is still unclear from what time and under what conditions tourist visas will be issued again.

May 20, 2020 Museums open again

Many museums had to close as part of the measures to contain Covid19, and it has now been announced that they will be able to reopen in June. However, there should be expanded hygiene regulations. A temperature measurement at the entrance is also under discussion.
