Writing should be part of learning
Learn to write in school
Finally being able to write is the most important thing for many ABC marksmen when they come to elementary school. Some preschoolers make their first attempts at writing in the last year of kindergarten before starting school. Most of them can already write their names and recognize the first letters. In the preschool of the kindergarten, swing exercises are ideally done in order to practice the correct pen hold. As parents, you can easily support your offspring in everyday life. Anything that trains the hands is effective. For example, let them knead dough, work with dough, peel and cut vegetables, make their own bread and pack their satchel on their own.
How do elementary school students learn to write?
As with learning to read, there are different teaching methods in Germany for learning the written language. “Reading by writing” has been one of them for around 20 years. A sound table is used for this. On this a picture is printed for each letter and next to it the respective word. For example: F for fish, H for house. The pupils can see from the pictures what the first letter looks like. With this method, even school beginners who have no previous knowledge should be able to work out whole words relatively quickly. Part of this teaching method is for students to write as they hear a word. Errors are initially not corrected by the teacher. School beginners should be relieved of their inhibitions when it comes to writing. Critics complain that sometimes the time is missed to teach students the correct spelling. Some students later have trouble replacing the misspelled spelling with the correct one. Therefore, today this method is usually supplemented with orthography exercises. The other method is the classic "primer teaching". Here the primary school students gradually learn individual letters and then put them together to form words. The first words are those that are written exactly as they are spoken, for example notebook, bread or dog. Little by little, special features are then worked out, such as the “ei” or the “au”, the “ß” or “ie”. Spelling mistakes are corrected from the start. In practice, most teachers use a mixture of several teaching methods. Often the first attempts at writing are not corrected in order not to negatively affect the motivation and creativity of the young beginners. However, during the first year, students are introduced to correct spelling.
Having trouble learning to write
Even in the first grade there are differences in the children's development. Some can write full sentences after a few weeks, while others struggle until the end of first grade. Try to stay calm if your child is a little behind. Most first graders see through the principle after a while. But every now and then, praise and encouragement won't get you anywhere. Then you should discuss with your child's teacher how they can be helped. For example, incorrectly holding the pen could be the cause of the problem. The hand can cramp up and hurt. So, of course, the child does not enjoy writing. This problem can usually be corrected relatively easily with a few hours of occupational therapy. In addition, there are certain aids in stationery shops that promote correct pen grip. Likewise, your child may not be able to handle the pencil they are using. Where one elementary school pupil presses too hard and therefore has to use far too much force, the other children drive too gently over the paper and hardly leave any traces. Try pencils of a different thickness or shape. A writing aid on the pen can also be useful here. Special writing pads that can be taken along with school accessories in the school satchel have also proven their worth. If these gentler countermeasures do not help, you should not hesitate to address the difficulties to the pediatrician. He can tell you whether there is a reading and writing disorder or dyslexia. The school entrance examination could also provide information in advance.
